The Power of Education
I grew up in a home that valued education. It was always the top priority in our home. The question was never if I was going to attend college, but where I was going to attend college. I always knew that education was the driving-force behind success. I knew that education was power. Because I saw the power of education in my life, I had a great desire to help others feel that same power. This desire led me to pursue a degree in education.
My formal teaching experience in the education has been both a success and a failure. It was a success when I presented a new idea or thought and saw students light up when they grasped the concept. It was a success when I heard students talking about how they wanted to implement ideas they had learned from the things I taught into their current and future lives. It was a success when I helped students see things on the brighter side. It was a success when I encouraged students to continue on and try harder and they actual did. It was a success when my students told me what professions they planned on having in the future and how they were going to achieve it. It was a success when I saw the power of education lift and elevate their lives.
Unfortunately it was a failure when I tried all that I could to motive the “unmotivated” student and he or she was still unmotivated. It was a failure when I saw students become lazy in their assignments and have the attitude of apathy towards education. It was a failure when I heard of students getting in trouble with the law. It was a failure when I saw students drop out of school.
So how do we instill in the lives of our students, our children, and those around us the value of education? How do we teach them that there is power in education? I think it all starts with us. We have to instill this love of education in our own lives. We have to lead by example and encouragement and then others will follow.
